Alas! my child, where is the Pen That can do justice to the Hen? Like Royalty, she goes her way, Laying foundations every day, Though not for Public Buildings, yet For Custard, Cake and Omelette…. No wonder, Child, we prize the Hen, Whose Egg is Mightier than the Pen. ~Oliver Herford, “The Hen”

“I don’t believe in twisting yourself into knots of excuses and explanations over the food you make. When one’s hostess starts in with self-deprecations such as “Oh, I don’t know how to cook…,” or “Poor little me…,” or “This may taste awful…,” it is so dreadful to have to reassure her that everything is delicious […]
Pecan Pies
July 12th was National Pecan Pie Day. I posted a cooking thought based on this and received a comment wanting recipes. As promised, though a day late, here are 2 pecan pie recipes that I love. The first pie is a traditional pecan pie that my friends and fellow foodies, Ming and Michelle, love and […]
Ugly Duckling Cake
Over the past couple weeks T and I have been working on launching our online store and over the past 2 days we’ve been celebrating Mother’s Day and dad’s birthday. Desserts for both occasions of course… and now I’m on a cake kick. This is a cake that my mom has made for a long time and seriously, […]

“He’d noticed that sex bore some resemblance to cookery: it fascinated people, they sometimes bought books full of complicated recipes and interesting pictures, and sometimes when they were really hungry they created vast banquets in their imagination – but at the end of the day they’d settle quite happily for egg and chips. If it […]

The RMS Titanic: Chapter 2
They say, “Hind sight is 20/20″ and as I’ve been studying the foods involved in the history of Titanic I’ve come to understand this saying to be fact. In perhaps an ironic twist of tragic fate the ill fated Titanic was built by folks who had left the farm lands of Ireland, moving to the […]
Lattice Corn Pie
In our never ending search for recipes we dug through a Taste of Home magazine and found Lattice Corn Pie. We’ve made this a couple times now, first following the recipe and then making it our own. Original Recipe:(by Kathy Spang Manheim, Pennsylvania) What You Need: 1 cup diced peeled potatoes 1/3 cup milk 2 […]
National Pancake Day
It is National Pancake Day. Hopefully IHOP is doing well today as we celebrate this tasty breakfast treat. Pancakes have been around since the 5th Century BCE and were given to us, by who else, the Greeks. There are of course many variations of the pancake: crepes, made popular by France, Pfannkuchen a favorite in Berlin, […]

When baking cookies: Always use large-sized eggs, unsalted butter and nuts, and pure extracts of vanilla or almond. Don’t sift your flour unless it’s called for. Use parchment paper if you don’t have a non-stick pan for easy clean up and stick free clean up. Let your cookies cool completely before decorating.

How to properly blend brownie ingredients Most brownie recipes call for melting the chocolate with the fat and adding this mixture to beaten eggs and sugar. Let the chocolate mixture cool completely before adding it to the eggs and sugar as it makes for a lighter brownie.
National Dessert Day: Chess Pie
It’s national something or other day every day. Today is National Dessert Day tomorrow is National Grouch Day. (I don’t know if the almighty they did that on purpose or if it’s just a bad joke…) Anyway, in honor of National Dessert Day I wanted to share a favorite pie of mine that just happens […]
Spinach and Sausage Quiche
I am reluctant to admit this but, I used to be intimidated by Quiche. Seems silly now I know, but it’s true. I always thought Quiche was complicated to make and would be very time-consuming. This was before I actually found out just how easy it really is to throw together a truly delicious Quiche with […]

Spinach And Potato Frittata
Get a couple animal lovers/bleeding hearts together, have them watch Food, Inc.© and the end result is born again vegetarians. Taby used to be a meat and potatoes kind of girl, while I savored hearty meals of beef and noodles with corn as the veggie. If confronted with the idea of vegetarianism five years ago, […]
